Over the winter, I will drop Le Faro and rotate the other 6 unless we get a chance to putt or play petanque. When we bowl, we can lunch at the Golf Club.

With our summer visitors heading back to their  homes abroad and our numbers reducing, we are going back to meeting once a fortnight for coffee mornings and lunches.

We met at the Bowling at Autun at 10.45am, we had the option of 1 or 2 games. We may have been on 3 lanes, in teams of 4 but we supported as if we were on one lane. The atmosphere was great, we all had fun, there were 2 watching which then became 3. After we went for lunch at the golf club, where we were joined by Eva for a short while, all were pleased to see her. We stretched out lunch to over two hours with great banter and good food. Hopefully we will repeat this during the winter months.

Just to bring you up to date with our BF coffee morning yesterday, which was held at Le Grand Café in Autun. Some nice surprises – three new people came to join us! Plus one member who was last spotted in the late summer of 2022. There were 12 of us in all, battling with the acoustics of the café, which are a bit difficult for big groups. Still, we all had a great time chatting to new and old members. Golf seems to be a popular topic, so if anyone out there wants to play, we have a few people in the group who’d be interested.

Just one small point – it seems that someone or someones forgot to pay for their coffee. If you’re suddenly clapping a hand to your mouth and going “Oh, my god! That was me,” then feel free to reimburse Dave when he comes back in April, as he very kindly stumped up for the missing drinks. In such a large group with so many drinks being ordered it’s an easy thing to overlook one or two.

The next meeting will be arranged as soon as possible. We need to find venues that can accommodate a group of up to about 12 people, which isn’t always easy at this time of year when we can’t sit outdoors, so any suggestions would be appreciated. We aren’t talking about lunch, just coffee. Otherwise, we may need to put things on hold until the weather improves. This is actually a good thing, as it means we’ve got loads of people now in the group, but it also means we’ve become victims of our own success!

Bearing all that in mind, if anyone would like to host a coffee morning or tea afternoon or whatever, please let us know. You wouldn’t need to provide eats of any kind, it would just be coffee or tea, though members of the group are usually willing to bring something along.

Yesterday (Friday 9 February) we had yet another successful coffee/ lunch gathering, this time at The New St George in Autun; 13 BF members came for coffee, and 11 stayed for lunch. We have three new members, and one of them, Daniella, joined us for pre-lunch coffee.

This is the second time we’ve met there, and as with the first time, the food was amazingly good and abundant, and we all left the premises feeling like happily stuffed pythons! How Alban does it we don’t know, but he caters with panache for everyone, and at a reasonable price. We haven’t arranged the next meeting, but you’ll be notified when we do. They’re always good fun, and as the personnel changes, so we all meet new people, or people we haven’t seen for a while.

Hoping to see even more of you next time. Meanwhile, remember that our AGM is coming up, and we have important things to discuss which affect all our members.

You’ll be pleased to know that BF started off the New Year with a bang on Wednesday. We had another of the successful “Not Monday Men” coffee/ lunch meetings, this time at La Brasserie in Autun. What a place it is, too! Amazing food, and very reasonable prices. Eleven of us turned up, ten for lunch, and although the staff were a bit surprised they rallied round and found space for us – and not a minute too early, as it’s a very busy and popular eatery. Given the amount and standard of the food, and the excellent service, plus the reasonable prices, that’s not surprising, but it does show that it’s advisable to book!

We had a great chat and catch-up over a leisurely lunch. Hopefully even more members will be able to come to the next of these meetings, which is going to be re-named – the current one is a bit of a mouthful.

Enjoy what’s left of January – the days are getting longer and Spring is just around the corner. Remember that there will be the BF AGM (via Zoom) very soon – circumstances have made setting a date a bit difficult, but it’s in hand. Please do try to attend, as it’s an important one and we want your voices to be heard.

Despite confusion over the whereabouts of the marquee, the weather was kind and everyone brought plates to share, which were enjoyed by all as can be seen.

A little later than hoped by our international members who had sadly gone home to their respective countries, nonetheless it was held, the first since Covid.
